Intro

InstrumentPro would like to welcome anyone who is viewing this site for the first time! Many people who are interested in DJing, but don't have much experience, aren't sure where to begin. As well, anyone who may be purchasing DJ equipment as a gift for someone else might not know what to look for. The following DJ guides are going to get you moving in the right direction as well as answer any questions you may have regarding DJ equipment along the way.

Purpose

Just so you know, the purpose of this guide is not to persuade you to buy the most expensive DJ gear out there. We're more interested in educating you on the facts of ALL of the DJ equipment available, so that you can make an informed decision as to what you'll need to start yourself off.

Turntables

For a long time, Technics ruled the DJing world. Technics were the norm in all clubs and with DJ's all across the earth. The Technics SL1200MKII and SL1210MKII were the standard. Not everyone has the money or the need for such a turntable. The fact of the matter is, Technics are no longer the norm.

Most current DJ gear manufacturers produce a turntable that will have comparable specifications and perform just as well as the Technics. Brands like Numark, Stanton, Vestax and Gemini all carry turntables that meet the same standards as the popular Technics. You may be tempted to by the latest and greatest Technics turntable (the SL1210MK5G), but unless you've been DJing for a few years and know of a specific attribute that this new turntable has that others don't, it's not a necessity. If you're brand new to this topic (DJing and DJ gear), and aren't sure of what to get yourself, you'll most likely want to start off with a full DJ package. Most packages come with everything you could possibly want to get yourself started.

Packages

Most packages contain everything you'll need to start yourself DJing (aside from the records). You'll usually find 2 turntables, a pair of slipmats (a felt mat that fits on top of the turntable and under the record to let the record slip when you put your hand on it). The package will also come with the cartridges, styli(needles), and the headshell. The stylus sits in the grooves in the record and the cartridge picks up the movement of the stylus. The cartridge then converts the sound from the stylus into an electrical signal which is processed through the mixer (which is used by the DJ to control the signal coming from the turntable).

In this guide, next to each turntable, you'll find the best selling packages that include that turntable. You can also view a full list of packages that include the turntable you're looking at by clicking on the turntable product page.

CD Mixing

CD mixing has become popular in the recent years and most companies now have CD Players on their product list. CD Players come in the single CD, counter-top style CD Players, as well as dual, rackmount models. To mix using CD's, you'll need two sound sources. This means any combination of CD players and turntables. Either way, they'll need to be plugged into the mixer.

Sound

The packages we carry come seperate from their sound projecting counter-parts (speakers). The speakers can be purchased a la carte (by themselves). A lot of the people, beginning DJ's generally connect the mixers output to an open line input on a home stereo system. The phono-to-phono cable needed to connect the mixer to the stereo is included in most packages!

If you don't have a home stereo to connect your DJ package into, you'll want to look at a pair of powered speakers (powered means the speaker has a built in amplifier), which you can also find on our site by clicking here. Once everything is hooked up... you're set to go.
