Compact flash cards are designed with an internal memory controller. Internal controllers with transfer rates from 1X to 45X are available. With typical usage, a CF card can be used for more than 100 years with no loss or deterioration of data. Type 1 compact flash is standard and refers to the thickness of the device. There is no Type 2 compact flash. Type 2 is IBM microdrive.
